I have been analysing data in respect of finding a relationship between Mt Etna volcano in Sicily, and the recent unprecedented seismic activity in New Zealand, and the Kermadec Islands. the following analysis is “testable”, and conclusions are for the opinion of those wishing to determine its level of relevance !
During the last 16 days from 16th February to 4th March, we have been witness to volcanic activity from Mt Etna, on a scale not seen before in several decades. Astonishingly high volume lava fountain displays (Paroxysms), occurring on a surprisingly regular frequency. Then on Thursday 4th March, significant seismic activity occurred off the coast of North Island, New Zealand, and the Kermadec Islands region. Consisting of two 7+ events, and an M 8.1 aftershock. During my search, I discovered several prospective correlations, that “may have” contributed towards the outcome of these stated events… my analysis is as follows…
Observed…
3rd March 10:16:08 UTC – M 6.3 West of Tyrnavos, Greece … 22’10’E – 39’45’N
4th March 13:27:36 UTC – M 7.3 Off East Coast of North Island, New Zealand … 179’26’E – 37’33’S
4th March 17:41:25 UTC – M 7.4 Kermadec Islands region … 177’50’W – 29’36’S
Mt Etna volcano in Sicily, Italy, on coordinates 14’59’E – 37’45’N
Analysis…
Between dates 16th February – 4th March, Mt Etna volcano erupted a total of 11 times. The New Zealand and Kermadec epicentres occurred at a distance of approximately 916 kilometres (570 miles) from each other. They do in fact share the same fault line (subduction zone), so it seems an obvious conclusion that the New Zealand event, was responsible for instigating the Kermadec Islands event several hours later… however, this is not the only thing they share!. The following table represents sunrise times on both the New Zealand and Kermadec epicentres, between dates 10th February – 4th March. The table also includes days of eruption from Mt Etna (E), and reference to the ATE threshold times on Mt kilauea, and Mauna Loa volcanoes in Hawaii… their inclusion will be explained later. The first column relates to sunrise times for New Zealand, followed by the Kermadec Islands…

2nd Mar – 17:48 UTC …. 17:44 UTC (E)
3rd Mar – 17:49 UTC …. 17:44 UTC
4th Mar – 17:50 UTC …. 17:45 UTC (E) + (E)This data indicates that the first in a series of 11 eruptions from Mt Etna, coincided with the synchronised sunrise times between the New Zealand and Kermadec epicentres on 16th February. It also shows that Mt Etna experienced two eruptions, on the day of 7+ earthquakes.
On 16th February at 09:19 UTC, it was moonset on the pre seismic Kermadec Islands epicentre. At “12-hours later 21:19 UTC, it was moonset on Mt Etna volcano.
On 16th February at 16:09 UTC, the ATB threshold (Astronomical Twilight Begins) was located on the pre seismic M 7.4 kermadec epicentre. Also at this time, it was sunset on pre seismic coordinates 22’10’E – 39’45’N Tyrnavos, Greece. At one minute later 16:10 UTC, Mt Etna erupted for the first time in this series !
On 18th February at 10:19 UTC, it was moonset on both the pre seismic New Zealand, and Kermadec Island epicentres.
On 18th February between times 09:33:08 UTC – 11:14:06 UTC, the moon was at its furthest distance of 398’089 km’s from earth for Apogee, during this period. At 11:14:06 UTC, the sun was located on longitude 14’57’E… 2 arc minutes west of Mt Etna.
On 19th February at 05:43:12 UTC, the moon was located on longitude 177’50’W Kermadec Islands, and it was sunrise on Mt Etna volcano. The first Paroxysm event then occurred 3 hours 10 minutes later at 08:53 UTC.
On 19th February at 10:36:07 UTC, the SLT (Setting Lunar threshold) was located on Mauna Loa volcano, and the sun was located on longitude 24’25’E… the opposite longitude calculates as 155’35’W Mauna Loa volcano.
On 20th February at 11:22 UTC, it was moonset on the pre seismic New Zealand epicentre, and moonset on Mt Kilauea volcano.
Strange Math…
The longitude distance between the New Zealand and Kermadec Island epicentres at 179’26’E – 177’50’W respectively, equates to 2 degrees 44 arc minutes. On 11th March at 10:45:35 UTC prior to New Moon, the sun was located on longitude 22’10’E, and the moon was located on longitude 19’26’E = 2 degrees 44 arc minutes. One minute east or west of these longitudes, and the figure will no longer represent 2 degrees 44 arc minutes. If you refer to the observed list above, you will note that the longitude of the sun at this time, matches the location of the M 6.3 Greece epicentre !
On the 2nd March between times 15:54:44 UTC – 15:58:43 UTC, the sun and moon shared the same lateral position of 6’57’S for the duration of this period. At 15:54:44 UTC, the moon was located on longitude “”167’12’E””… at “12-hours” earlier 03:54:44 UTC, the moon was located on longitude 18’58’W. When the M 7.3 New Zealand event occurred on 4th March at 13:27:36 UTC, the sun was located on longitude 18’59’W!. Several hours earlier at 05:39:12 UTC, the moon was located on the same longitude of 18’59’W, and the ATE threshold (Astronomical Twilight Ends) was located on Mt Kilauea volcano. When the Kermadec Islands event occurred on 4th March at 17:41:25 UTC, the moon was located on longitude “”167’03’E””… at “12-hours” earlier 05:41 UTC, the ATE threshold was located on Mauna Loa volcano !
This is the sum of relevant correlations I have uncovered during my search. There are more, but my focus here was the period of shared sunrise times, and the initial eruption period from Mt Etna, prior to the Paroxysm events. This analysis may, or may not be of relevance, but combined with the odd planetary alignment, and a seismic wave or two… it should contribute towards an interesting seismic picture !
I have posted this analysis in the forecast thread because this will be my “last” submission for an undetermined amount of time. My health has been deteriorating as a result of missed medical appointments, due to the pandemic… and I need to get this fixed. I have also become a little demoralised with the lack of participation on this website… present company excluded (JEC). I am here because because I would like to think I am contributing something, that may go towards making a difference. But for all my posts and no other interactions… I believe I am the only one reading them anyway. Even the proprietor has not remarked on these pages in over 12 months… so where is the incentive to continue !
My good friend “Counselor” once stated; we are all here because we are passionate about earthquakes… “All Here”!
I miss my friend… 🙁
Adios
