Authorities have seized exotic ants from a Canberra home Gumtree.com after being tipped-off about someone trying to sell them on Gumtree.
One of the seven species was identified as one of three known to cause the most number of cases of anaphylaxis in Thailand.
“While they may seem small and harmless, exotic ants can pose a huge risk to our environment and way of life, and represent a significant biosecurity risk to Australia,” head of the agriculture department’s biosecurity operations Nico Padovan said in a statement on Monday.
Sen-Constable Richardson said he believed the man, who uses a series of aliases to carry out his swindles, lived in the bayside area.

“He’s got to live around here because he’s always hitting this area,” he said.

“We’re seeking anyone that can identify this punter to come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers or call Sen-Constable Richardson at Kingston crime investigation unit on 9556 6135.

The reward is valid until midnight on July 15.

Clothing: Known to wear smart casual clothing with a distinctive black baseball cap, jeans and black vest. Also known to wear business attire pants and a button down shirt.

Aliases used: ‘Paul’, ‘Andy’, ‘Nathan’, ‘Mike’, ‘Rhys’, ‘Kane’.

Surety: At most thefts he has offered and left behind active mobiles phones, wallets and a set of keys.

Vehicle: A gold Ford Territory or similar vehicle was spotted near the scene of some thefts and is believed to be connected to the bandit.
He said: “Police have the serial numbers and photos of all equipment.

“Please report anyone trying to sell this — they are total scum.

“The cost to replace the whole lot would be about £500.

“I’m hoping somebody has seen something. Even though it was late at night on Sunday or early Monday, there are always people milling around the area. One person could have taken the items but it certainly would have been easier for two people because of the size of the items.

“Apparently the police will check second-hand shops but I’m watching sites like Gumtree and eBay for anything that comes up.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We are investigating the theft of items from a car in Mid Wynd, Dundee, between 1am and 8am on Monday July 3.

“A quantity of stereo equipment along with other items was taken.

“If anyone has any information which could assist the inquiry, please call 101 or speak to any police officer.

    “Our reference is CR/17365/17.”

A Gumtree spokesperson said: “We do not tolerate the listing of stolen items on our site, and have measures in place to ensure that our site is a safe place to buy vehicles, car parts and accessories.

“We encourage users to report anything suspicious to us through the ‘Report’ button that sits on every ad on our website.

“Our dedicated safety team will then investigate. If you are concerned that an item you’re viewing is stolen, don’t buy it – report it to the police.

“We work constantly with law enforcement to share information and aid their investigations.

“While Mr Roberts’ sound system might not turn up on Gumtree, we’ve no doubt he’ll find a suitable replacement from the numerous legitimate stereos and speakers listed on our site.”
