1) The header of the Document
The header for the document in MLA formatting is simple. Just add the page number followed by your last name with space. This information is placed in the top-right corner of the page in the header section.
2) Highlighting Personal Information
In MLA formatted documents, the cover page is not added. Instead, you write your full name, Instructor Name, Course Title, and date respectively in the top-left corner of the document. The font style and size match the rest of the document.
3) Title of the Paper
Directly below your personal information comes the title of the paper. The title is also placed in a plain format without any bolds or highlights. Do not add any additional space before the title. Align your title in the center of the document.
4) Headings
For headings in MLA formatting, all the first level headings are bold and aligned left. For second-level headings, they are simply italicized and aligned left. Every first alphabet of the heading content is Capitalized.
5) Paragraph Formatting
The first line of each paragraph follows a half-inch indent on the left. You can indent your paragraph by pressing the tab button. A half-inch indent will be automatically added. The spacing between the paragraph is also regular. No extra spaces are added between paragraphs.
6) In-Text Citation
For every external source you are citing in your paragraph, make sure to reference it by adding the last name of the author followed by the page number in parenthesis. In-text citations are added at the end of the reference added.
Always be careful with in-text citations. Make sure that you cite your source as soon as you add it. Do not leave it for the end, or things can get jumbled up. For example, when I write my essay I use citation software for in-text citations. This not only keeps them organized but adding end-references also becomes convenient.
7) Font Formatting
Once you are done with your content, make sure to arrange all your content in font style Times New Roman in standard size 12. Do not excessively capitalize or enlarge the size of the text or headings.
8) Line Spacing and Margins
All the content in MLA formatting is double-spaced. Regular margins are used for APA formatting.
9) Works Cited
At the very end of the document, the detailed references are added under the heading “Works Cited”.
